Are You Applying Your Work Mentality To Your Relationship?

There are many of us who try to replicate the same success and validation we enjoy in our jobs and careers into our relationships. This is a not a good idea and here are a few reasons why...

  1. Your job is based on achieving goals within logical conditions and set procedures, while your relationship should be based on flowing emotions, expanding horizons and new experiences. Applying a work structured mindset will usually kill the spontaneity and excitingly and even sometimes unpredictable nature of a relationship.

  2. Chain of command is something a lot us have to deal with at work, where you’re either doing the telling or you’re being told. In a relationship you have to be comfortable being both the boss and the worker At times to ensure the right amount of flexibility and synchronicity in getting things done for you and also doing things for or responding to your partner.

  3. Many women in ‘gender bending jobs,' are forced to compete with men in male dominated environments. This can create an aggression within them that may actually serve them well on their job paths, but after 5 pm that aggression is no longer needed if they are in a relationship with a male who already provides the masculine energy they need. Being unable to leave ‘masculine aggression’ at the workplace can actually stop some men from treating their females partners, 'like a lady' – something that a lot of working women say is missing from their relationships.

The solution to this is actually simpler than we think and begins with us being clear about our motives and purpose in life. Understanding our purpose gives birth to our identity and once that is known, we’ll begin to make choices based on our needs rather than our wants. This is how we can create an ‘ecosystem’ for ourselves where our jobs, relationships, friends, etc. all work towards one aim – fulfillment. Then we can avoid being pulled in two directions between our careers and personal life.
